This class will explore the universal themes of identity, authority, freedom, responsibility, resilience amidst anxiety, community, and living a meaningful purpose-driven life. We will see how the particular rituals and texts from the Jewish spring holidays (Purim, Passover and Shavuot) provide perspectives (some 3,500 years in the making!) to help make sense of these themes. This is not a “how to celebrate” class; rather, it frames rituals as responses to the human condition, which we benefit from by revisiting each year. The holiday themes don’t change radically—but we do! These components allow Jewish holidays to be wonderfully nimble in how they bring relevance to our human challenges.

Future sessions will address additional Jewish holidays.
