Israel Today: Innovation and Identity in a Divided World

Contemporary Israel is known for its remarkable creativity, technological innovation, and cultural diversity. Cities such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem have become global centers for startups, digital technology, music, and the arts. Israeli scientists, physicians, and engineers have contributed groundbreaking advances in medicine, agriculture, cybersecurity, and renewable energy. At the same time, Israel’s rich mix of ethnic, religious, and linguistic communities has created a vibrant and dynamic national culture.

Alongside these achievements, Israel faces significant internal and external challenges. Political polarization, social inequality, and tensions between secular and religious communities continue to shape public debate. Questions surrounding democracy, judicial reform, national security, and civil liberties have deeply divided public opinion in recent years. Beyond its borders, Israel continues to confront regional instability, ongoing security threats, and the unresolved Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Despite these complexities, many Israelis remain deeply committed to building a society grounded in innovation, resilience, democratic discourse, and hope for a more peaceful future.

Join us for an engaging and insightful program as Paul Liptz shares his unique perspective on Israel’s history, society, challenges, and achievements, and helps us better understand the complexities and realities of contemporary Israel.

Paul Liptz is a social historian who served on the faculty of Tel Aviv University for 40 years. He also served in the Israeli Army reserves, where he lectured officers and non-commissioned officers on the social and cultural dimensions of Israeli society.

Since 1990, Paul has traveled extensively, lecturing in more than 25 countries and serving as a Travelling Scholar throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

Born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Paul arrived in Israel as a volunteer on June 4, 1967—one day before the Six-Day War—and has lived there ever since.

He is married to Brenda, and together they have four children and thirteen grandchildren.
